History

Established in 1905 by Edmund Barton, 'Bartons' is a fourth generation family business based in St.Helens, Merseyside, England. Edmund, at the turn of the last century, with his wife Lydia, started their business by preparing vegetables in the back yard of their house in Lascelles Street, St.Helens; steeping the vegetables in spiced vinegar and sauce mixes.

They sold their pickles from hand carts, then horse and cart, through the cobbled streets. In the summer months, Edmund and Lydia brewed Dandelion and Burdock, Sasperella and Lemonade, developing a business for the seasons. The photograph shows Edmund in front of Bartons first motorised vehicle, in 1926.

Doris Barton, daughter of Edmund and Lydia, married Alfred Fairhurst. Together, Doris and Alfred ran Bartons until 1965, when Edmund Barton Fairhurst, (third generation), son of Doris and Alfred, became, and is still Managing Director.

Joanna Jenner, daughter of Edmund (current MD), is the fourth generation of the family to join the business in 1993, after graduating with a BA (Hon.) in Retail and Catering Management. Joanna realised that Education is a prerequisite for success in today's competitive market, so gained a Post Graduated Diploma in Food Manufacture, an Advanced Food Hygiene Certificate, a Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage, and is currently studying for an MSc in Food Safety, majoring in HACCP for SME's.

Bartons Market:

Bartons strong local consumer base has been developed at the grass roots level on a door to door basis, giving the ultimate in service to every individual customer. Bartons takes this philosophy of service to all of our customers, and this has aided growth through time from serving Market Stalls, Corner Shops, Small Retailers, Delicatessens, Butchers, and Garden Centres, to more recently the major multiples, where growth in public interest in local products, like Bartons Piccalilli, matches the consumers desire to buy and support local foods, which offer distinctive tastes, reflecting local eating habits, whilst maintaining traditional methods of recipe development and manufacture for generations to come.
